Ross Marshall takes overall win in his own car
while Craig Mitchell achieves his first overall podium, taking 3rd place
Apart from a few spots of rain at times, the forecasted dry and windy weather proved to be the case but the chill factor on the wind was not anticipated - it felt more like October most of the day.
We were missing David Hunter and Ali Thom but as well as the other usual participants Ross Marshall came out to play in his own car, Robert Marshall made a last minute return driving brother John’s car and Pino Palazzo was out for the second this year, this time in car 45.
In the team cars, Ben was out in car 22 (but with a well-used 1200 engine under the bonnet), Stevie Coull in car 68, Carol in car 1 and Allan Wood in car 44.
So 21 cars took to the grid.

This started most unfortunately with a traffic jam at McIntyres. It was triggered by a coming together between Allan and Alasdair Gauld which saw Allan, Keirnan Murray, Scott Hynds and Alasdair all eventually sidelined. It also delayed Ross Mickel, Ben Mason, Colin Atkinson and Gerard McCosh. The safety car was despatched for just one lap whilst the two stricken cars were efficiently moved off the circuit.
Racing resumed with Carol, from pole, taking up the running. She led for almost all the race but did not have it easy with Billy Wait and Tony Caig for company eventually being joined by Ross Marshall. Ross just squeezed in front to take the win from Carol, Billy - achieving his first podium race finish - and Tony, these four under a second apart at the line. Behind them the field was a bit strung out with Craig Mitchell next up from Ericco Palazzo, a charging Ross Mickel and Stevie Coull. Completing the top ten were Colin and Ben who’d been enjoying a good tussle.

Heat 2

From the fourth row of the grid Ross Marshall hit the front on the second lap and went on to take a comfortable win. In second place on the road was Ross Mickel but he adjudged to have overtaken Ben under a yellow flag and given a time penalty to drop him behind Ben, who was 3rd on the road. Ben had very close company from Glenn Burtenshaw, Gerard and Keirnan, these four a mere 6/10th of a second apart at the line. Next up was Craig followed by Billy. The top ten was completed by Colin, recovering from a clash with Ross Mickel while contesting 2nd place, with Alasdair on his bootlid.

Final
|
A flying start from row four of the grid saw Colin into 2nd place by the end of the second lap with Alasdair in the lead. Colin got past on lap 4 but Alasdair hung on and these two fought all the way to the line with Colin just getting the verdict by 2/10 of a second. A good few seconds back came Ross Mickel who had made steady progress from the back of the grid and had been having a good scrap with Ross Marshall until Marshall spun out exiting the chicane. Behind him was Scott Hynds with Gerard breathing down his neck. There then followed a train of four cars led home by Tony, whose engine had ‘gone off’, from Keirnan, Craig and Stevie. Completing the top ten for the first time was Allan.

Before the more astute of you question the final outcome, Ross Mickel, who ‘won’ the day on the road, unfortunately accrued points on his race licence during the day and the current Legends Rules dictate that Championship points are consequently lost as well.
And so Honours for the Day went to Ross Marshall (460 points) from Colin Atkinson (420 points) in 2nd and, achieving his first ever overall podium finish, Craig Mitchell (400 points) in 3rd.
The Driver of the Day Award, chosen by Scott Hynds, went to Gerard McCosh for his steadily improving lap times during the day.
In the Individual Championship Colin Atkinson increased his lead to 285 points from Ross Mickel with Alasdair Gauld 170 points behind him in 3rd place.
Still comfortably leading the Team Award (and 2nd equal in the Championship Table) are the brothers Mason. Team Coull/Hunter has moved slightly ahead of Team Marshall/Brown, just 25 points separating them.
In the Rookies, Craig Mitchell has re-taken the lead from Keirnan Murray by the smallest of margins at 10 points. Jeff Pritchard is in 3rd now some 40 points ahead of Austin Pirie.
And so just a month to the penultimate round, again at Knockhill on Sunday, 19th September.
