2010 SMRC Championship - Round 5

Tony takes his first overall victory of the season

while Craig Mitchell gets his first race podium finish

Legends Car Racing 2001
Heat 1

From the front row of the grid David took up the running, swiftly joined by Alasdair. This pair eased away from the rest, Alasdair just besting David to the line. A superb and mature drive by Craig saw him work his way steadily up to 3rd and then fend off the very close attentions of Tony and Gerard on the last lap, Craig taking his first podium on only his fourth race "in the pack". A bit of a gap and then came a four car train with Colin leading home Glenn, Elliot Mason and Ross in his repaired car. For the second time in the weekend, Errico completed the top ten.
The only non-finisher was Carol whose diff lost all drive.

A fired-up Carol took a fine win -and the fastest lap of the weekend - in a five-way battle at the front heading home Tony, Ross, Glenn and Elliot, these five less than a second apart at the line. Half a second behind was Colin. A little gap saw Kiernan home in a best ever 7th just keeping back Alasdair and David, this trio just over half a second apart at the line with Scott completing the top ten.
Pino was the only non-finisher with a mechanical problem.

Final

What a race! For a couple of laps John Denning held the lead. At the Corkscrew on the second lap the pursuing cars of Scott and Carol made contact, delaying Scott and with Carol picking up a puncture. By the next lap Scott was in the lead followed by John, Kiernan and Ross. John spun out and Ross demoted Kiernan and then gradually reeled in Scott. He hit the front on lap 6. But by now Tony, in a fine drive from the back of the grid, had worked his way through, demoting Ross and Scott on the next lap and going on to take an excellent win. Behind him the battle raged on, now with Gerard and Alasdair harrying Ross. In the end Ross took a spirited 2nd place, in spite of spending 200m on the grass with his foot planted to the floor on the exit of Peel on the last lap, from Alasdair and Gerard, a mere second separating this trio. Just behind was Scott with Kiernan going one better to take 6th, Elliot on his bumper with Colin and Glenn a car length behind. David completed the top ten.

Legends Car Racing 2001

Honours for the Day went to Tony Caig (545 points) from Alasdair Gauld (490 points) in 2nd and Ross Mickel (465 points) in 3rd. [So close was the racing that four drivers were tied in 4th place on 400 points]

The Driver of the Day Award, chosen again by the BRSCC, went to Tony Caig for, in particular, his drive in the final.

In the Individual Championship Colin Atkinson has slightly increased his lead to 135 points from Ross Mickel with Alasdair Gauld just 10 points behind in 3rd place. But definitely not out of the running is Tony Caig just 95 points behind them in 4th place.

Comfortably leading the Team Award (and still topping the Championship Table) are the brothers Mason. Team Brown/Marshall are now in 2nd place from Team Coull/Hunter.

In the Rookies, Craig Mitchell leads Keirnan Murray by a mere 100 points with Austin Pirie and Jeff Pritchard (neither of whom were at the meeting) tied in 3rd place.

Not long until the next round which is back to Knockhill on Sunday, 25th July.

Unfortunately your scribe will not be there (on holiday) so, although I will be able to post results and points on my return, there will be no report - unless anyone wants to have a go……….?
