2010 SMRC Championship - Round 4

Ben’s day

with Glenn Burtenshaw taking his first overall Scottish podium

Well what a weekend to pick for our first away round for a number of years. Anglesey was looking its very best with clear blue skies and almost wall-to-wall sunshine all weekend tempered slightly by a coolish sea breeze which made for perfect racing weather but precluded extensive sun-bathing.

In spite of the development of the new circuit(s), Anglesey has managed to retain the feel of a "Club" racing circuit. The marshalls, who always enjoy and appreciate the Legends, are very friendly as are all the regular officials. And we were made most welcome by the organising Club, the BRSCC, and in particular the Clerk of the Course, Ray Sumner.

The arrival of a dozen Legends on two car transporters made quite a spectacle; indeed the drivers of the transporters were complaining the journey had taken a lot longer than they were expecting as passing motorists kept slowing down to take photos!

The whole Legends paddock seemed to be very ‘chilled’ and relaxed. This did not preclude some superb and competitive racing taking place but in the main tremendous respect was given by drivers to each other and the Friday and Saturday nights passed in a convivial atmosphere.

Sadly Frank Hynds, Austin Pirie, Jeff Pritchard, Alan Fearnley and John Marshall could not make it. But the ‘regulars’ were joined by Ali Thom, having his first Scottish outing of the season, and Irishman John Denning

In the team cars, Saturday saw Ben Mason in car 22 and Stevie Coull in car 68 with Elliot Mason at the helm of car 22 and Aly Hunter at the helm of car 68 on the Sunday. In the seat all weekend were Andrew Donald in car 44 and Carol Brown in car 1. Chris Hynds’ car 27 became a team car for the weekend with Chris driving on the Saturday and, having his first ever outing on the Sunday, was Pino Palazzo.

And so 20 cars formed up for the first race.

Heat 1

A rather over-enthusiastic start saw a coming together in the first corner, certainly involving Scott Hynds and Errico Palazzo and causing various drivers grass-tracking to avoid the melee. A bump at Rocket (the complex at the end of the long uphill straight) saw Tony Caig take a knock which caused him to shed his oil filter and deposit oil from Rocket to Peel (the right-hander leading on to the hill before the Corkscrew) which made the rest of the race interesting. David Hunter led at the end of lap 1 but Ben Mason and Ross Mickel, both from mid-grid positions, were right on his bumper swiftly demoting him. This pair battled closely for a couple of laps but then Ben eased away, only to make a small mistake and find Ross right on his bumper again. But he held on comfortably for the win from Ross. David withstood repeated pressure from Colin Atkinson to retain 3rd. Next up was Glenn Burtenshaw who had dropped back into the clutches of Carol but re-passed her. Behind Carol was Alasdair Gauld, from the back of the grid, followed by Andrew Donald with Gerard McCosh, from the very back of the grid, breathing down his neck. Billy Wait completed the top ten.

Heat 2

The front row pairing of Alasdair and Gerard attempted to break away but were tailed by Tony who was then demoted by Glenn and Ben. A three lap tussle then ensued with Ben negotiating his way to the front for his second win from Alasdair, Glenn and Gerard, these four under a second apart at the line. Tony held a watching brief behind them. A gap saw Carol with, on the road, David shadowing her. Next up was Colin, having bested Scott on the last lap, with Ross, recovering after a clash with David, on his bootlid and Craig Mitchell a fraction behind him.
Post race, David was deemed to have, albeit inadvertantly, punted off Andrew Donald at the very fast Church corner and was given points on his licence which meant that he scored no points for the race.

Final

As a result of his non-finish in the first race, Tony was favoured with a 3rd row grid start which he took advantage of to lead at the end of lap 1. He opened up a gap of over 3 secs and, even though Ben had managed to get from the very back of the grid to 2nd by mid race and catch Tony on the last lap, Tony made his car very wide and held on for a fine win. Behind them was a great battle involving Carol, Colin, Gerard, Alasdair and Glenn. The order changed from lap to lap but in the end Gerard prevailed over Colin, Carol, Glenn and Alasdair, these five barely a couple of seconds apart at the line. Next up was Craig, for his first top ten finish, and Kiernan Murray, also for his first top ten finish. A very pleased Errico rounded off the top ten.
The only non-finisher was Ross who had slightly mis-timed the distance remaining on the approach to Rocket and launched himself off Gerard, breaking his steering on landing and thus out of the race.
