2010 SMRC Championship - Round 3

First race win for Chris Hynds

And a fine overall birthday victory for John Marshall (a day late)

For today, team car 22 was piloted by Elliot Mason, Aly Hunter was in car 68 and Andrew Donald having his first outing in car 44.

Heat 1

On the formation lap, Dean’s engine started to deposit oil just past McIntyre’s and on the racing line through Butcher’s and the chicane. Other driver’s managed to alert him to a problem. As he was on the front row of the grid, once round the hairpin he sped up to go into the pits. Unfortunately Billy, on pole, thought he was ‘getting away’ and increased his speed dramatically - only to ease off when he saw Dean going into the pits. There was a concertina effect behind resulting in a very ragged start. John got a blistering one and was into second at the end of the first lap and the lead by lap 3. He was comfortably out in front only to do a 360 after the chicane allowing Ross Mickel to close up and just pip him to the line. Some seconds behind came Colin with close attention from Nick and Elliot Mason. And then a veritable train of cars led by Glenn, who’d finally bested Billy’s very wide Legend, from Billy, Tony, Gerard, Aly Hunter, Scott and Frank (who’d ‘forgotten’ about the oil and got caught out on lap 4), these seven 1.5 seconds apart at the line.

Heat 2

Ali led off but was soon demoted by a charging Frank and then Ross Mickel. This latter pair were battling it out for the lead when Ross’s car caught the back of Frank’s on the main straight spearing Frank off at some speed into the tyre wall. Ross then forgot to brake in time for Duffus and spun down the hill ending up broadside in the middle of Leslie’s causing some consternation to following cars. But all avoided him. This handed the lead to Tony from Ali and Scott, these three contesting the last three laps with Tony taking the win from Scott and Ali, under a second apart at the line. John, off the 7th row of the grid, had another good run coming home in front of Aly. Next up was the recovering Ross. In 7th was Andrew recording his first sub 62 second lap with Colin, Glenn and Elliot in close attendance.
Non finishers were Chris (contact at chicane on first lap), David (broken engine mounting), Frank and Allan Fearnley (broken cam).

Final

The front four on the grid maintained their grid order for the first couple of laps with Ali demoting 4th placed Errico on lap 4 and then Carol on lap 7. He then battled it out with Chris and David for the remainder of the race. Having led from the start all the way, a thoroughly deserving Chris went on to take his first ever race win with David holding second from Ali, these three under half a second apart at the line. Carol held onto fourth from a rapidly closing Colin. Next up was a trio of cars led by John from Tony and Elliot, these three also split by just half a second. Ross was next home with Glenn completing the top ten.
Non finishers were Andrew (with a recurrent misfire) and Gerard (with a broken exhaust).

And so Honours for the Day went to John Marshall (485 points) from Ross Mickel (450 points) in 2nd and Tony Caig (also 450 points, but with less overtakes) in 3rd.

The well deserved Driver of the Day Award, chosen by David Hunter, went to Elliot Mason for his pair of fastest laps.

The Gentleman of the Day Award went to again to Craig Mitchell.

The Individual Championship has Colin Atkinson leading it by just 50 points from Ross Mickel with Alisdair Gauld 180 points behind him. But by no means out of the running are Tony Caig and David Hunter who are not far behind.

Comfortably leading the Team Award are the brothers Mason from Team Coull/Hunter and Team Marshall/Brown.

In the Rookies, Craig Mitchell leads Keirnan Murray with Austin Pirie and Jeff Pritchard tied in 3rd place.

With 12+ of the regular drivers now recording sub 62 second lap times and thus very evenly matched, getting through traffic is not easy. But it is pleasing that the racing is clean and respectful. It was good NOT to see the same faces on the podium for every race and particularly pleasing to see Chris win Sunday’s final with David and Ali both taking podiums.

It’s now a long break until the next round which is our only "away" round - well a double header - at Anglesey on 26th & 27th June. One not to be missed as Anglesey is a great circuit and we will be running the Coastal Circuit which includes the "Corkscrew".
