2010 SMRC Championship - Round 2

Ben Mason again

with the two Rosses not far behind

What a glorious start to the weekend’s racing. Bright sunshine greeted us, albeit with a bitingly cold northerly wind. And that was the weather pattern for the whole weekend with 6 dry races.

We were joined by last year’s Scottish Champion, Ross Marshall, sharing a team car (no.1) with former Champion, Carol Brown, Ross out on the Saturday and Carol on the Sunday. Nick Brace and son Dean made the trip up, both of them concentrating on the National Championship but the double-header giving Dean an opportunity for further track time. Out for the first time this year were John Marshall, who had finally made it back from his extended holiday in Dubai, and Chris Hynds, driving his Dad’s car no.25. And making his first ever appearance on track was newcomer Allan Fearnley in car 07.

For the Saturday, team car 22 was piloted by Ben Mason, Stevie Coull was in car 68 and Alan Wood in car 44.

And so 25 cars formed up on the grid.

Heat 1

Off pole position Ross Marshall took up the running. He lost the lead briefly on lap six to Nick Brace but regained it and held on the line. But he was under pressure from Ben, Ross Mickel and Nick for the last couple of laps, just over half a second separating them at the line. Earlier in the race Scott Hynds had a coming together with Ericco Palazzo at McIntyres, sidelining them both, which caught and delayed Frank Hynds as well as bringing out the Safety Car. Some of the drivers had not heeded the Raceiver warning of the intended deployment of the Safety Car and/or failed to see the SC boards which resulted in Billy Wait and Glenn Burtenshaw being sidelined, Ben delayed and Colin Atkinson with damage to both ends of his car. Behind Nick at the flag came a train of cars, all recording similar lap times, with David Hunter leading home Colin, Chris Hynds, Gerard McCosh, Ali Gauld, Dean Brace and John Marshall, these covered by a mere 3 seconds.

From the second row Ali took up the running but was overhauled by Ross Mickel and Ben on the second lap. This pair fought tooth and nail to the line with Ben getting the verdict by 1/10th of a second. A fast start by Colin saw him in fourth place by lap 3 being promoted to third on the last lap when ?contact saw Ali shuffled down the order. Colin led home another train of cars comprising Nick, Frank, David, Tony Caig, Chris, Ross, John and Scott Hynds, these nine each separated by a mere car’s length.

Final

From the second row, Scott took up the running. But with an engine down on power he was overhauled by Gerard on lap 2. He was caught by Frank on lap 6, demoted on lap 7 but re-took the lead on lap 8. However this pair were so busy scrapping that they were caught by Ross Marshall and Nick. On the road Ross narrowly took the win from Nick, Frank and Gerard, under a second covering all four. However Nick was deemed to have overtaken under a yellow flag and given a 1 second penalty which dropped him to 4th place. Behind Nick was a fast closing Ben with Ali a second behind. Next up came four way tussle with Ross Mickel leading home John, Glenn and David, these four just over a second apart at the line.
