2009 SMRC Championship - Round 9

A different overall winner

as Scott Hynds takes the victory for the day

Simon Belcher returned south on Saturday evening but Andrew Donald had recovered enough from his unfortunate fall on Friday evening to be able to pilot his car. And Scott Hynds was able to take the grid this time driving what is usually his Dad’s car.

Heat 1

We were first race at 8.30 a.m. and although the rain had stopped and the track was beginning to dry out, it was distinctly slippery. From the 7th row, Ross Marshall made a blistering start to take the lead on lap 3 and go on for win by over 5 seconds. Front row man Nick had led initially and held on for a fine 2nd place. In third came Scott in a stunning drive also from row 7 but in a ‘strange’ car. Some way behind and rather spaced apart came Alex (who had gone straight on at Duffus while lieing third) from Alasdair and Colin. They were followed home by Ben, who had twice been into the kitty litter at the hairpin, with a trio of Aly Hunter, David Hunter and Gerard.
There were three non-finishers being Frank, who had clashed with Ross Marshall on Hyslops and ended up in the tyre wall, Ross Mickel, who had shot straight off at McIntyres early on with a stone jamming his throttle wide open, and Tony, whose back axle had become ‘dislocated’ (probably as a result of damage the previous day) so causing consternation to following cars as he fishtailed and spun his way from the finish to the start line.

Heat 2

There was a slight delay before the start of the race whilst the marshalls worked hard to deal with a line of oil which had been dumped up the main straight in the previous race. We were staggered to see them using a detergent to try and disperse it rather than the more usual, quick and very effective cement dust. The narrow oil slick became a hazardous Legend-width detergent slick and all drivers stayed clear of it for the start and most of the race.
With Ross Marshall on pole it would seem he was on for a certain win. But exiting Clarke’s on lap 4 with Ross Mickel on his bootlid Marshall’s driveshaft failed and Mickel had nowhere to go, the two of them ending up in the gravel and out of the race. Frank inherited the lead but was pressed extremely hard all the way to the line by Scott, just 8/100th separating them at the flag. A now flying Ben bested Tony on the last lap for the next two places. Alasdair had a small cushion from Alex who had got the better of Colin but could not shake him off. David had again struggled to get past Billy but finally managed it followed home by Nick who’d been dicing hard with Gerard.

Final

From the result sheet and chat afterwards this race produced a titanic battle between the front four contenders with the outcome uncertain right to the line. In the end Ross Marshall took the win form Ben, Ross Mickel and Frank, this quartet a mere half second apart at the line. Tony just held on to 5th from Scott. These six were quite a way in front of the next battle with Alasdair leading home Alex, Nick and David, these four under a second apart at the line.
The only non-finisher was Ali Thom who had thrown himself off exiting the chicane.

Thoroughly deserved and to popular acclaim, Honours for the Day went for the first time to Scott Hynds (495 points) from Ben Mason (485 points) in 2nd and, for the second time in a row, Alasdair Gauld (430 points) in 3rd.

The Driver of the Day Award, chosen by Alasdair Gauld, went to Scott Hynds for his outstanding performance during the day driving a different car.

The Gentleman of the Day Award went Aly Hunter.

In the Individual Championship, as a result of his dnf Ross Marshall did not quite manage to tie up the Championship but with a lead of 1130 points and only a total of 1200 possible points to be scored at the last two meetings he only has to manage one 12th place in the next six races to secure the Championship.
Second place is still all to play for with Alasdair Gauld slightly increasing his lead over Frank Hynds to 145 points. But Alex Knight, 160 points behind Frank, and Ross Mickel, 85 points behind Alex, are not yet out of contention.

The Mason brothers’ Team Car has wrapped up the Team Award being now some 1800 points clear of the rest. But second place is very close with Team Coull now just 10 points ahead of Team Hunter.

In the Rookies, with Martyn Lyell not able to make it, Nick Brace has a clear lead over David Hunter, now in 2nd place, from Martyn.

Apart from the unfortunate red flag, given the variable weather conditions the driving standards were generally to be commended.

The next meeting is back to the more usual single header at Knockhill, this time being on Saturday, 26th September.
