Frank’s day but only just from Ross Mickel
while Tony Caig takes first race win of the season
Our second double header of the season, over two days, duly arrived. The Saturday was very civilised with qualifying and the three races all in the afternoon whilst the Sunday was more spread with the first race at 8.30 a.m. - but we were finished by just after 3 p.m.
The sky looked ominous but qualifying and the first race were on a dry track. The second race, delayed by a red flag, was on a damp track and the final - well it was pouring with rain.
Various drivers were unable to make it but Simon Belcher came up again (for the Saturday only) and we were joined for the first time by Ross McEwan, out in Lance Gauld’s car 21. The Team cars saw Elliot Mason out on Saturday with Ben at the wheel on Sunday, Stevie Coull out both days and Andrew Donald just out on the Sunday.
20 cars formed up on the grid.

Heat 1

From the front row, Ross Mickel took up the running with Frank Hynds in pursuit. There then ensued a race long battle with Frank just getting the win by 8/100th of a second while, reportedly, trying to drive Ross off the track on the drag to the line from the hairpin. Lurking just behind them was Alasdair Gauld with Ross Marshall having closed fast after finally getting the better of Tony Caig. Next up and rather on his own was Alex Knight. There was then quite a gap to the scrapping of David Hunter and Elliot Mason with Colin Atkinson and Billy Wait fighting for last top ten slots.
Notable moments lower down the field had seen Chris Hynds go off at Duffus and Nick Brace spin exiting Clarke’s.
The only non-finisher was Scott Hynds whose engine let go mid race and took no part in either of the next two races.

Heat 2

The first attempt lasted to just beyond McIntyres when Tony and Billy clashed with Billy executing a very slow roll off the circuit which immediately brought out the red flags. Colin was also caught up with nowhere to go and these 3 did not make the restart.
For some inexplicable reason given that it would only have taken just over a minute longer to run the full distance, the fresh race was cut to 7 laps. Without the red flag the race would have been run in the dry; however the rain started, making the track very slippery. By the end of the first lap the top four finishers were in almost in order with Ross Marshall taking the win from Frank, Alex (who had held off Frank for 3 laps) and Ross Mickel. Alasdair inherited the next place after Nick had another ‘moment’ at Clarke’s this time sliding into the tyre wall and ending his race. From the very back of the grid, Simon Belcher was an impressive 6th having just demoted Elliot who had his mirrors full of Stevie Coull having just squeezed by David.

Final
|
It was by now pouring with rain. From the second row, Tony was straight into the lead by the end of the first lap and went on to take the win. He did though have Ross Mickel, who relishes these conditions, for company but Ross could not find a way past. Alasdair came home a solid third ahead of Frank, Nick and Alex. David Hunter had finally got past Billy and opened up a comfortable gap. Billy had Gerard McCosh breathing down his neck with Elliot just behind him.
The only incident of note was that, most unusually, Ross Marshall spun down Duffus and was collected which damaged his steering and saw him finish well down the order.
