2009 SMRC Championship - Round 2

Ross Marshall does it again

this time with two race wins and a second place

Glorious. That is the only way to describe the weather. A clear blue sky, very warm (24 degrees) and a light and very welcome easterly breeze.

As well as the usual ‘regulars’, we were joined by Ross Marshall’s cousin, David Hunter, driving John Marshall’s car 6. In the team cars Elliot Mason was having his first run in car 22 as was Mark Spiers in car 44. Billy Wait was missing as were Simon Belcher and Nick Brace, both the latter two racing with the National Legends at Cadwell Park.

And so 24 cars formed up on the grid.

Heat 1

From the front row, Pat Hynds took up the running with brother Frank hot on his heels. Frank took over the lead on lap 2 and held on to take the win from a rapidly closing Ross Marshall. Pat was comfortable in 3rd with Tony Caig next up. He was a second clear of a veritable train of 6 cars led home by Alex Knight, Chris Hynds, Elliot Mason, Alisdair Gauld, Lance Gauld and Gerard McCosh, a mere one second separating this group.
Ross Mickel was the only non-finisher, beached at Clarke’s following contact with Lance.

Heat 2

From the second row, Ross Marshall was in the lead by McIntyre’s and ran out a distant winner. Ali G had got clear early on and took a comfortable 2nd place. Behind him a great scrap raged between four cars with Alex Knight taking his first podium from Tony, Gerard and Ross Mickel, just half a second separating these four at the line. Next up was Chris Hynds followed home by Colin Atkinson from Ali G (3/1000th apart) with Stevie Coull rounding out the top ten.
Scott Hynds was the only non-finisher having been black-flagged for oil leaking from his rocker-cover gasket.

Heat 2 - 8 laps

Final

From pole position, Scott took up the running with Ross Mickel in pursuit, these two disputing the lead until Scott was again black-flagged with oil still pouring from his rocker-cover gasket. From the back of the main grid (row 7), Ross Marshall had gradually worked his way through overhauling Ross Mickel on lap 8 and taking the win by half a second. Lance had been holding 3rd until retiring on lap5 handing the slot to Pat who held off the attentions of Elliot and Ali G. A bit of a gap saw Alex, who’d clashed with Tony earlier in the race, recover to best and hold off Colin with Gerard, having been delayed by a spinning Ericco Palazzo & Chris Hynds, just behind. Tony recovered for the next position with Ali Thom taking a well-earned 10th place.
Apart from Scott and Lance, Frank Ogg retired on the first lap with a broken ball joint and later in the race Frank stopped with a very smokey engine.

Final - 10 laps
1st Ross Marshall 10m 31.07 secs (73.08 mph), 2nd Ross Mickel, 3rd Pat Hynds, 4th Elliot Mason, 5th Ali Gauld, 6th Alex Knight, 7th Colin Atkinson, 8th Gerard McCosh, 9th Tony Caig, 10th Ali Thom, 11th Matryn Lyell, 12th Stevie Coull, 13th Aly Hunter, 14th David Hunter, 15th Chris Hynds, 16th Mark Spiers, 17th Mark Lees, 18th Tim Nichol, 19th Ericco Palazzo, 20th Michael Hogg.
DNF Scott Hynds, Lance Gauld, Frank Hynds, Frank Ogg.

Fastest lap: Ross Marshall 61.09 secs (75.42 mph)

With a faultless performance and lapping nearly a second quicker than anyone else, Honours for the Day again went to Ross Marshall (585 points) from Alex Knight, taking his first overall podium (460 points), and Alisdair Gauld (455 points)

Although having raced karts, the Driver of the Day Award went to David Hunter for his impressive performance on his first outing in a Legend.

And the Gentleman of the Day Trophy, being awarded to the highest points scorer in the Gentleman’s grid, went this time to Stevie Coull.

In the Individual Championship, Ross Marshall has a 200 point lead over Alex Knight who has leapt into 2nd place just 10 points ahead of Tony Caig with Alisdair Gauld a few points behind him.
The Team Car of the Mason brothers has a massive lead over team Hunter who is just 30 points clear of team Coull.
Martyn Lyell leads the Rookies and should feature in the overall results when he joins the pack next time out.

In spite of some 5 red flags in other classes three were none in the Legends races and we should once again applaud the generally excellent driving standards.

A brief interlude to the next round the Championship which is as a support race for the British GT meeting over Saturday, 13th and Sunday, 14th June. As it stands the draft timetable has us qualifying late on Saturday morning with one race late in the afternoon and 2 races on the Sunday.
